Selecting the Right Car Repair Shop

With the cost of car repair going up, choosing the right service center is important than ever.
If you are paying a couple of hundreds of dollars to have your automobile fixed, you had better make sure that every dollar you have actually spent was truly needed to repair your car and wasn’t just an inflated store’s rate or completely unneeded repair.

Which store is better? The dealer? A big service center? A little independent store?

Each one has it’s positives and negatives.
Each one is under pressure to make money in order to make it through.

The dealer has the latest diagnostic equipment and the factory-trained professionals, but the cost of labor, about $90 per hour, is not uncommon (not to point out the cost of parts.).
Large service center. Costs are better than at the dealer, but the schedule of the latest diagnostic equipment and factory-trained professionals are in question.

Small service center. These stores simply can’t afford the investment needed to purchase orrent the pricey diagnostic equipment or pricey training.
Back to the original question – how to select the right service center? There is no simple answer.
First off, the store and repair area need to be clean and the store’s professionals need to be ASE certified.
There always a big question that people ask: how honest are store’s workers? You always need recommendations from other people, who have used this store before, and you always have to talk to local BBB (Bbb) for complaints against this service center.
If the nature of your car’s problem has been determined, and car doesn’t need any additional diagnostic, like if you need a brake job, you can go to the small independent store if you know an excellent and honest mechanic there. They can do an excellent task and their prices are very competitive.
If your automobile does need a diagnostic, its always better to go to the place that has the proper diagnostic equipment (not always the car dealer). Read the following info before you go and spend some money.
Most of the cars on the road today have the OBDII – on-board diagnostic system. If you have inexpensive scanner (code reader) that cost $50 – $80, you can connect this scanner to the connector below the steering column and scan on-board diagnostic computer for so-called “trouble codes.” If scanner shows any problem codes, refer to the booklet that comes with the scanner.
For the most part, the booklet will give you an idea, which system is malfunctioning.
Your advantage? If you understand what system is malfunctioning, and the service advisor at the repair store tells you that something completely different need to be repaired, you understand what is going on.
Likewise, for example, if your scanner tells you that problem is your oxygen sensing unit. If the problem is not the wire, that connects the sensing unit to the car’s electrical system, you can call around, get prices for the part and labor, and select a place to change the sensing unit. If, after repair is done, your scanner doesn’t show the oxygen sensing unit related problem code, the problem was repaired!
You can save a great deal of money in this manner!

Like we have stated before, the low-cost scanner (code reader) is your very first line of defense against high vehicle repair costs and dishonest professionals.
Lastly, proper maintenance will help decrease unforeseen repair work, which will save you money!
