Choosing the Right Car Repair Shop
With the cost of automobile repair increasing, choosing the right service center is essential than ever.
If you are paying a number of hundreds of dollars to have your automobile repaired, you had better be sure that every dollar you have actually spent was actually needed to fix your automobile and wasn’t just an inflated store’s price or completely unnecessary repair.
Which store is much better? The dealership? A large service center? A small independent store?
Each one has it’s positives and negatives.
Each one is under pressure to make money in order to survive.
The dealership has the most recent diagnostic equipment and the factory-trained professionals, but the cost of labor, about $90 per hour, is not unusual (not to point out the cost of parts.).
Big service center. Costs are much better than at the dealership, but the accessibility of the most recent diagnostic equipment and factory-trained professionals are in question.
Little service center. These stores simply can’t afford the investment needed to purchase orrent the expensive diagnostic equipment or expensive training.
Back to the initial question – how to choose the right service center? There is no simple answer.
First of all, the store and repair area must be clean and the store’s professionals must be ASE licensed.
There always a big question that people ask: how truthful are store’s workers? You always need recommendations from other people, who have used this store before, and you always need to talk to local BBB (Better Business Bureau) for grievances against this service center.
If the nature of your automobile’s issue has been determined, and automobile doesn’t need any additional diagnostic, like if you need a brake job, you can go to the little independent store if you know a great and truthful mechanic there. They can do a great task and their prices are very competitive.
If your automobile does need a diagnostic, its always much better to go to the place that has the proper diagnostic equipment (not necessarily the automobile dealership). Read the following info before you go and spend some money.
Most of the vehicles on the roadway today have the OBDII – on-board diagnostic system. If you have inexpensive scanner (code reader) that cost $50 – $80, you can connect this scanner to the connector below the steering column and scan on-board diagnostic computer for so-called “trouble codes.” If scanner shows any problem codes, refer to the booklet that comes with the scanner.
For the most part, the booklet will give you an idea, which system is malfunctioning.
Your benefit? If you understand what system is malfunctioning, and the service advisor at the repair store tells you that something entirely different must be repaired, you understand what is going on.
Likewise, for example, if your scanner tells you that issue is your oxygen sensing unit. If the issue is not the wire, that links the sensing unit to the automobile’s electrical system, you can call around, get prices for the part and labor, and choose a place to change the sensing unit. If, after repair is done, your scanner doesn’t show the oxygen sensing unit associated problem code, the issue was repaired!
You can save a great deal of money this way!
Like we have said before, the economical scanner (code reader) is your first line of defense against high automobile repair rates and deceitful professionals.
Lastly, proper maintenance will assist reduce unexpected repairs, which will save you money!
